Recently, I decided to take leave from reality (or whatever you call this place where I live). It was time to go surfing in Mexico! My friends and I piled into a rental car and drove the length of the coast, happy to be young and alive and unenlisted. We penetrated the imaginary boundary where U.S. turf becomes Mexican turf and were on our way to Rosarito. It was in Rosarito that we were, uh, “called to account” by the Federales. After browsing the coast for olas, or waves, we spotted a point break without any gringos in the water. In a grievous lapse in judgment, I parked the car in the wrong direction on a public street. I must have gotten excited about the surf and forgotten myself. So it goes. An hour later when we returned from the beach, our vehicle was being “investigated” by three Federales. Evidently, parking in the wrong direction is grounds for anal probing in Mexico. The plumpest of the Federale —which is how you tell their rank—informed me of my crime. He looked at me with a condescending air, one eyebrow raised and both eyes fixed on my soul. He asked if we had any drugs that he should know about (always a jackpot for the policía). While the chief grilled us, another Federale helped himself to a cigarette in my glove compartment. He lit it with a sneer, enjoying his position in the game. I wanted to point out that nicotine is itself a drug but decided that the timing wasn't good. These men had a chip on their shoulder the size of the Baja Peninsula. Maybe it was because their government didn't pay them enough to feed their families. Maybe it was because we stood a collective 16 feet taller than them. Whatever the case, it was clear what they wanted. The back door of the squad car opened to take us to the station. It's hard to say what the charge might be in a land where they don't write the laws down. “We're in something of a hurry,” I said. “Do you mind if we take care of the ticket right here?” I extended a $20 bill to the Capitan, who looked offended. Not by the bribe but by the amount of the bribe. My friends took the cue and presented some cash in smaller increments (to make the sum look greater). At length, the officer looked satisfied. The door to the squad car closed. We were free to leave. As I turned to step into the driver's seat of our own car, the chief spat an unbecoming blob of tobacco in my direction. I don't think he was spitting at me but at my father's father. As an Aryan California native, I am aware of what many Latinos think of me. The Federales saw in me a spoiled, arrogant, detestable white boy whom they hated without having to know. They seemed to think that every American citizen owns his own McDonalds. My ancestors had trod upon their ancestors and mistreated their land for centuries. To be fair, my ancestors have been responsible for a great deal of injustice and misery in the world. They didn't single out Mexico but spread the suffering copiously around the globe. The Federales nonetheless saw in me the “people” who had oppressed, deported, and otherwise abused their people. What these pilfering lawmen need to know is that I don't want or need a people. I just want to go surfing on a coast that has existed for thousands of years without any borders or races or traffic violations. I shouldn't be held accountable for the cruelty of my ancestors. I had no say in the matter. In fact, I'm a pretty damn nice guy. I hardly know my dad, let alone my ancestors. It's not my fault that Mexican lawmen do not earn a livable wage. It's downright unfair. It's also unfair that I can't play in the NHL. At what point will I stop atoning for the injustice
of the world and the sins of my not-so-great grandparents? How many O.J.
Simpsons will golf for a living until we call it even? So long as the Federales
continue to treat their tourists like they treated me, they will wonder
why their economy suffers. Their people will see the peso become an even
less meaningful unit of currency until it goes the way of the pre-Hitler
mark. Even gringos don't like to be judged by the color of their skin,
and, as you may have noticed, guys like me never get tired of telling the
stories.

"Gothic

Sunday, December 21, 2003 Yeah, yeah... I know... Megan was last week's Blogger Babe.
