And So It Goes - Owed to a Friend

     I'd like to introduce you to a friend who lives here in town. I won't tell you his name, but if you were to guess “Dylan,” you'd be right.

     Dylan is part of a rare breed of people that I consider to be extraordinary. I usually don't recognize a person as such because one, I'm vain, and two, I simply don't meet them. Dylan is as “out there” as you can get without being out of reach, and we're all the better for it. Don't worry, I'm not coming out of the closet or anything.

     Dylan is the kind of guy you see in the movies but not in real life. You'd think that society couldn't handle it. What I've learned in my time with Dylan is that society has no choice. There's no law against laughing too loudly or talking to everyone you see. And whereas some people cannot, in fact, handle Dylan, those who can feed off the energy.

     Example: Last week, I pulled up beside Dylan at a stoplight. Having not seen him in a while, I honked my horn and waved. Dylan looked over and chuckled at the chance encounter. Instead of waving back like a normal person, he got out of his car and rambled over with an oversized grin.

     “Hey, stranger. You don't write, you don't call…”

     Dylan's 150-pound Labrador followed him to my car and licked me in the face. The driver behind me was not amused. In his slapdash way, Dylan told me to call him or else he would order an air strike on my house. I asked him to make it on my noisy neighbors instead.

     The light turned green.

     Dylan hurried his goodbyes and tried to chase his dog back into the car. The dog thought it was part of the game and bolted around the other side, barking playfully. Seated in the car, Dylan's son laughed his head off.

     People started to honk and gesture. Dylan waved at them apologetically, but it only incensed them. Dylan smiled to himself like a guy who enjoyed the humor of the situation even as he struggled to end it. So it goes.

     Another example: Although he could afford almost any car, Dylan was driving this old, beat-up convertible. I don't know cars very well, but if I had to describe it in professional terms, I'd call it a piece of caca. Dylan said it was a classic Cadillac convertible. The door was coming off its hinges, it was rusting at the seams, and there was a giant happy face on the door. Dylan loved that car and insisted on driving it to the beach.

     Halfway through the canyon, the car began to make a rackety noise, like a wrench was lose in the engine. Dylan turned up the radio. Smoke began to trickle through the vent. Dylan turned up the music some more.

     “No problem,” he yelled. “We'll run the heater to cool off the engine.”

     A mile later, and we noticed flames flickering through the hood.

     “Okay,” said Dylan, “we may have to stop.”

     He pulled to the side of the road and lifted the hood. A cloud of smoke billowed into the air. Dylan took off his shirt and whacked the flames with an amused expression, jester to the gods. Having conquered the fire, he drew a deep breath and looked at me with a protruding bottom lip in mock-sadness.

     Then he became himself again and said, “Don't sweat the small stuff, Jason. We're going surfing.”

     Before I could say “excuse me?” Dylan was soliciting passers-by for a ride. I had almost collected my things when he flagged down a truck. He had a unique approach to hitchhiking: he stood in the middle of the road. It was very effective.

     Moments later, we were sitting in the back of a stranger's truck en route to the beach. The Cadillac smoldered in the distance on the side of the road. Dylan got on his cell phone and called a tow truck company to have them pick up the car-cass. They asked what they should do with it. He told 'em they could have it.

     These are not isolated cases. They happen every time I see Dylan. He is a full-time cartoon living in a black-and-white world. It tickles me to know that he lives right down the street. Sure, we don't talk much now that I'm so important in my own mind, but I somehow take comfort that he's there.

     You may find Dylan playing basketball with the towel guys at the car wash, where they gamble on whether he can dunk their basketball in the back lot. You'll see him barefoot at the grocery store chatting with his daughter, asking her perhaps how she feels about gas prices. She is three. You may catch him parked the wrong way on a residential street saying hi to a friend. Last I heard, Dylan had run into a burning house to rescue some kids.

     I'm not saying that the guy is superhuman; his wife could share some not-so-extraordinary moments. I'm just saying that he lives the way most of us would if we could only crawl out from under the clutches of self-consciousness.

     Marianne Williamson wrote the following, no doubt about Dylan:

          Our worst fear is not that we are inadequate; our deepest fear
          is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our
          darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, “Who am I
          to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?”

          Actually, who are you not to be?

          There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people
          won't feel insecure around you.

          It is not just in some of us, it is in everyone, and as we let our
          own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission
          to do the same.

          As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence liberates
          others.
