And So It Goes - Tipping Schmipping

     This past weekend, my wife Yahaira and I had the misfortune of getting hungry during the Great American Feeding Time. We arrived at a local restaurant and found people everywhere. No. Everywhere. There were people in the lobby, people not in the lobby, people in the street, people inside other people (pregnant woman)…

     Because I follow this notion to eat only when I’m hungry, I don’t get out for dinner much. I had no idea this mayhem existed. What could possibly attract so many people? Were they giving free massages with every purchase?

     Yahaira and penetrated the herd outside the restaurant, holding hands so that we didn’t get separated. I wanted to pull out a cattle prod and say, “Mooooooove.” Being good sports, we stayed the course and were finally paged to be seated. Yes, you get paged when your seat is ready. So it goes.

     Yahaira and I don’t eat much. She is petite, and I have to save room for chocolate. When we saw the mountains of flesh being hauled past on serving trays, we decided to split a meal.

     The waiter materialized shortly and said, “Hi, my name is Eric. Can I start you off with something expensive to drink?”

     Well, that’s what he meant. Eric delivered his spiel about the specials and how the lobster fought like the dickens when they caught him and how I could really impress my woman by purchasing a bottle of Chateau Petrus Reserve. Eric. She’s my wife. She knows I’m poor.

     I passed on the Petrus and told him that we’d be splitting the steak and shrimp platter. The smile fell from Erick’s lips. He assumed those bitter Garfield eyes as he scribbled my order. Once and again, he glanced up to see exactly what a cheapskate looked like. Eric was very concerned with how much we were not spending. Like the car salesman, he had arrived at our table with great expectations and a talent for add-ons. Now he was dealing with “splitters.”

     “Are you aware that there is a split-plate charge?” he said.

     It may have been that time of month for me, but I wanted to flambé this guy. I tipped my head and said to Yahaira, “What do you think, honey? Should we order twice as much food so that Eric gets a bigger tip, or should we just stick with what we want?”

     She turned medium-rare red and buried her face in the menu. Eric and I stared at each other like heavyweight fighters—minus all the muscles—until he finally left. 

     Shortly thereafter, a young lady stepped up and said, “May I take your order?”

     In the politest tone that ever dripped from the human tongue, Yahaira said that we would be splitting the steak and shrimp platter and that we were eager to pay the most reasonable split-plate fee. I looked over my shoulder and met eyes with Eric. If looks could kill. 

     I turned back to our relief waitress and said, “Yes, and we would also like a bottle of Chateau Petrus.”

     Over dinner, Yahaira and I discussed tipping from theory to practice; and although she made some very good points, the bottom line is that we disagreed and you only get to hear my opinion.

     Ahem.

     Tipping sucks. When I sit down at a restaurant, I expect the server to be cordial because that is his job. I don’t want to be bullied, however subtly, into buying something I don’t want. The restaurateur pushes a waiter to do this for obvious reasons. They call it “upselling.” Most servers don’t need the push; they are in it for the tip.

     In my not-so-humble opinion, a server should come to my table, record what I want, and bring it back. It really isn’t that complicated. The same thing goes when I’m in a hotel and order room service. When the courier brings my food, he should feel a sense of accomplishment in having performed his job. He couried. It’s ludicrous for a hotel guest to pay $150 for a night of shelter and then be expected to throw money at everyone who sticks out his hand.

     Yahaira said something about tips being based on performance, but I couldn’t hear her over my opinions. A server’s livelihood is based on performance, but what job isn’t? Should I tip the garbage man when he stops to pick up the paper plates on the ground? Should I tip the clerk at the grocery store for telling me where I can find the Q-tips? Should I tip my shrink when he pays attention to what I’m saying?

     I peeked over my shoulder and saw that Eric was still giving me the stink-eye. Oonga boonga.

     Yahaira argued that servers aren’t paid enough adequately and thus depend on our tip, to which I replied, “Exactly!” That is the problem. The restaurateur has been hiding behind this clever “custom” for too long. Why can’t they pay their servers? Judging by the lines outside the door, it isn’t for want of business. What a racket it is when an employer can hire someone for peanuts with the understanding that the customers will make up the difference. Thank God we don’t pay airline pilots that way. The onus should be on the owner to pay servers enough money that they don’t cop an attitude when I split a meal with my wife. The same goes for pizza delivery guys, taxi drivers, bellhops, hairdressers, blackjack dealers, and bums on the street. Everyone has their hand out as we pass, and we keep tossing money because… because… it’s customary.

     Yahaira and I finished our dinner as pleasantly as possible. I told some jokes, but she didn’t laugh (mainly because they weren’t funny). Remember, no matter how bad your life is, you can take solace in the fact that you don’t live with me.

     Ultimately, with the help of our overpriced wine, we were able to rekindle our childlike morale and forget about the debate. I tipped the waitress exceedingly well but only to spite Eric. Donning our coats, we left the restaurant; and just as we hit the invigorating night air, we were confronted by a young man holding our valet number in one hand and an itchy palm in the other.

With all the news on TV lately about the sub-zero weather and snow that the East Coast and upstate NY areas are experiencing, you shouldn't forget that we here in Southern California have had our share of devastating weather also. Blogger Babe - Audree Jaymes
