In case you haven't noticed, with all our new development there has been an influx of homeless people. They appear to be more concentrated downtown, but you can spot them anywhere these days. What is it about a city that beckons the homeless? The odor? The safety in numbers? The amount of food we discard in restaurants? Whatever the case, all big cities have their bums. In a way, we invited them. So I decided that our homeless contingent should have a voice like any other. They presumably have their own version of the language—a Vagabonics—which they should be able to express in print. I wandered the streets in search of a subject for my interview. In order to “blend,” I babbled to myself and occasionally cursed at the sky. Now, is that something an armchair essayist would do? I was on the streets, man, pounding the pavement for a lead. Two miles later, I found one in a bag lady named Deborah. Okay, she wouldn't tell me her real name, so I assigned her one. “Deborah” is a transient who has been walking the streets for 2 years according to local shop owners. She stands 5'5" tall and wears her dirty-dishwater-blonde hair in dreadlocks. For you kids out there who are thinking about growing dreadlocks, the trick is to refrain from washing or combing your hair for roughly one year. Deborah is a light traveler. She pushes her estate around in a Ralphs shopping cart whose right front wheel is on the fritz. So it goes. I introduced myself to Deborah and asked what she carried in her shopping cart, to which she replied, “Dirty sombitch make those f-f-f-fellas what they are.” The ice was broken, and our interview was underway. I squatted beside Deborah near a street corner. This neighborhood has always been a cultural cross-section, so it was an appropriate setting to give voice to our transient population. I asked Deborah a series of politically charged questions, but she refused to look at me. She looked at the ground, she waved at passing cars, but she absolutely would not look at my eyes. I asked her how she liked the city, and she finally answered: “Damn cat scratch nohow, and don't you go thinkin’ otherwise.” I recorded her words as best I could; Vagabonics is hard to follow. I asked Deborah if she felt that our vagrant situation had been sufficiently addressed by local government. Deborah closed her eyes and said, “Scratching, always s-s-s-scratching...” It became evident that I was merely exploiting her frailty for the sake of my story, which meant that I had arrived as a reporter. I tried to continue my questioning about political inequity and cultural imbalance, but it only annoyed my subject. I didn't want to annoy her; I wanted to know her. So I got off my Ted Koppel kick and went for poetry. “So what about this scratching cat?” I asked. Deborah's eyes lit up like bloodshot egg yolks. She started a sermon about cats and the dirt in Nebraska and the smell of...something or other. Then Deborah laughed like she had made the funniest quip in the world. “And don't you go thinkin’ otherwise,” she added, gesturing with her E.T.-like finger. “I won't,” I said. Deborah smiled. She was missing a few teeth. I gave her $20 and told her not to spend it on whiskey. She laughed like that was a stupid thing to say. I'm not sure if it was stupid as in “of course I'm going to spend it on whiskey” or stupid as in “of course not.” Deborah stood up to leave. She had things to do, people to see, trash bins to check. She told me that the animals loved to scratch in the air. I shook my head as if I were just about to make the same observation. What I learned from our dialogue is that Deborah doesn't live in the city. She lives in Deborah-land. Her body may have gravitated here, but it wouldn't matter if she were in L.A., Detroit, or Timbuktu. As long as there are enough people for her to go largely unnoticed, she can call it home. I also found that Deborah isn't walking garbage. She doesn't wander the streets drooling on herself because she prefers it to menial labor. She is a mental patient searching for help that doesn't exist. As much as I enjoyed her answers to my questions and the fact that she finally met my gaze, in the end it's a sad situation. And don't you go thinkin’ otherwise.

Sunday, January 4, 2004 Carolyn is a 24 year old, 5'8, 125 lb Asian Hottie.
